Maximum Form Width

Learn how to adjust the Maximum Form Width to allow your forms to use more space on larger screens.

Overview

The Maximum Form Width setting controls how wide your form appears to respondents on screen. By default, forms display at a comfortable reading width β€” but if your form includes wide tables, multiple columns, or detailed content, expanding the width can significantly improve the experience on desktop.

⚠️ Important: This setting only affects how forms display on larger screens such as desktops and laptops. On mobile phones and tablets, forms automatically adjust to fit the screen width regardless of this setting.

How to Set the Maximum Form Width

  1. Open your form in the Form Builder.

  2. Click the Settings tab.

  3. Locate the Maximum Form Width option.

  4. Select one of the available options: Normal, Wide, or Full.

  5. Click Save, then Re-publish your form for the change to take effect for respondents.

πŸ“Œ Note: If you update this setting but do not re-publish, respondents will continue to see the previous width until the form is re-published.

Choosing the Right Width

Use the table below to help decide which option best suits your form:

Option

Best for

Normal

Most forms with standard fields β€” optimal readability

Wide

Multi-column layouts, longer text fields, signature fields

Full

Table-heavy forms, grid or matrix fields, complex layouts

πŸ“± Mobile Devices: These width settings apply only to larger screens. On mobile devices, all forms automatically scale to fit the screen β€” this setting has no effect on how your form looks on a phone or tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. Will this affect how my form looks on mobile devices?

A. No. IndyForms forms are fully responsive. On mobile phones and tablets, forms always scale automatically to fit the device's screen, regardless of the Maximum Form Width setting.

Q. When should I use Wide or Full width?

A. Wider layouts work best for forms that contain table fields, long text responses, and complex layouts with multiple columns.

Q. Does changing the width affect my form fields?

A. No. This setting only controls the maximum width of the form layout β€” it does not change the behaviour, validation, or output of individual fields.

Q. Can I change the width after publishing my form?

A. Yes. You can update the Maximum Form Width at any time from the Settings tab in the Form Builder. After saving, re-publish the form to apply the change. Until you re-publish, respondents will continue to see the previous width.

πŸ’‘ IndyTips

  • Use wider layouts for large tables: Forms that include Table fields often benefit from Wide or Full width so all columns are easier to view.

  • Keep standard forms on Normal width: For most forms with simple fields, Normal width provides the best reading experience.

  • Consider long text fields: If your form includes long responses or detailed information, a wider layout can improve readability.

  • Test your form preview: Use the Preview tab in the Form Builder to see how the form looks with different width settings.
